The History of The Gailes
It was built in 1891 by John Orr, a wealthy businessman who wanted to create a luxurious and exclusive retreat for himself and his friends. The hotel was designed by the renowned architect Robert Lorimer, and it quickly became one of the most popular destinations in Ayrshire.
The Gailes Hotel has hosted many famous guests over the years, including King George V and Queen Mary, Charlie Chaplin, and Winston Churchill. It was also the site of the 1902 Open Championship, one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world.
In the early 20th century, the hotel underwent a number of renovations and expansions. In 1903, a new wing was added to the hotel, which included a ballroom, a restaurant, and a bar. In 1930, the hotel was further expanded with the addition of a new swimming pool and tennis courts.
The Gailes Hotel continued to operate throughout the 20th century, despite the challenges of two world wars and the Great Depression. In the 1960s, the hotel underwent a major renovation, which included the addition of a new wing and the refurbishment of the existing rooms and suites.
In the 1980s, the hotel was acquired by the SimpsInns Group, a leading hotel and restaurant group in Scotland. Under the ownership of SimpsInns, the Gailes Hotel underwent a number of further renovations and expansions.
